얼마전 Premium 레이블의 여성 보컬 중심의 오디오파일용 컴필레이션인

을 소개한 적이 있었다.

이 네장의 음반을 소개하면서 소개 음악으로 걸어 둔 것이 Andrea Zonn 의 Better Be
Home Soon 이라는 곡이었다. 그래서 이번에는 아예 Andrea Zonn 의 앨범을 하나
소개하고자 한다.

본문의 가장 아래에 앨범 크레딧을 올려 두었는데 이 안드레아 존의 역할은 아래와 같다.
Andrea Zonn : Fiddle, Cello, Violin, Vocal Harmony, String Arrangements, Engineer,
Producer, Vocals (Background), Viola

주로 현악기 파트를 자신이 직접 연주하면서 보컬과 겸하고 있다. 또한 이에 그치지
않고 엔지니어와 프로듀서까지 겸하고 있다.

중고역의 자신의 보컬과 고역의 현악기의 음질 역시 뛰어나지만 다른 음반에 비해
월등히 차이는 내는 것은 저역부분이다. 저역의 볼륨이 큰게 아니라 저역의 범위가
아주 깊게 내려간다.

충분히 제 성능을 내는 베이스 유닛이라면 그 저역의 깊이를 실감할 수 있지 않을까
싶다. 사실 더블베이스와 같은 큰 통을 가진 현악기라면 모를까 타악기에서 이런
깊이 있는 저역을 녹음하기란 쉽지 않을 것이다. 또한 그 음원을 음악에 적합하게
어울리는 작업 역시 쉬운 것이 아니다.

하지만 이 음반은 그것이 가능하게 하였다. 이에 따라 저역이 제대로 들리는 유닛으로
이 음반을 플레이 하게 되면 이번에는 앰프나 전기 문제가 따라올 것이다. 안드레아
존의 목소리가 베이스 드럼에 밀리거나 어느 부분에서 트롯트가수처럼 떨게 되면
이것은 결국 앰프/전기의 문제가 될 것이다. (물론 어느 정도의 볼륨이 올라갔을때의
이야기지만)

특히 카오디오에서 제대로 된 우퍼의 세팅 여부를 가리는 척도로도 사용이 가능할것이다.

여튼 나름대로 충분한 음악성을 갖추고 또한 충분한 오디오적인 쾌감을 담고 있는
음반임에는 틀림이 없다.

Album Reviews

Fiddler and singer Andrea Zonn has been doing session work in Nashville since
she was 16, and is currently a mainstay of Vince Gill's band.

Her first solo album nicely showcases her sweet and mellow voice, while mainly
relegating her fiddling to the background (and augmenting it with viola and
"chin cello").

She's chosen mostly slow and mid-tempo songs for Love Goes On, which is kind of
too bad -- there's nothing wrong with slow songs per se, but the one nagging
disappointment throughout the album is its lack of energy.

Her Cajun-flavored cover of Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Heads Up for the Wrecking
Ball" has a certain amount of oomph, and she applies a graceful Celtic twist to
the whimsical flavor of the old Split Enz song "Weather With You." And when
Vince Gill steps in to contribute harmony vocals on the gorgeous "In My Own
Backyard," the effect is electric even though the song itself is languorous --
it brings to mind some of Richard & Linda Thompson's more heartbreaking songs.

But her version of Neil Finn's "Better Be Home Soon" lacks the edge of romantic
threat that gave the Crowded House version its subtle bite, and "Another Day" is
just as mundane as its title. Everything else slips by pleasantly enough,
without really making you sit up and take notice. This is a promising debut
overall, but not an unqualified triumph. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
